Wine Escapes is a specialist wine tourism company that seeks to provide its guests with the best possible experiences tasting wine in our beautiful Cape Wine Regions.
To do this we offer private, tailored tours based on what our guests enjoy drinking back at home, regions they might like to see and food and wine pairings they might like to do, with a specialist wine guide.
Our goal is to provide our guests with in-depth insight into the different wine regions around the Western Cape so that they leave understanding more of what our beautiful region has to offer and hopefully choose a South African wine again once back home.
Explore the Winelands and its mountains on foot! The Cape Winelands has some of the most incredible hiking trails in South Africa and the difficulty ranges from beginners to advanced, easily allowing something for everyone to enjoy. Here are our recommendations.
Stellenbosch – Jonkershoek Nature reserve
Trail distance: 17km
Estimated time: 6 hours
This scenic trail has a steep climb to a contour path just below the Banhoek peaks. This path leads to Bergriviernek, which has amazing views of Assegaaiboskloof. Bring a swimming costume with you.
The route winds across the picturesque Dwarsberg plateau, with streams surrounded by Disas flowers, to Kurktrekkernek. From here, you can take a short detour to the summit of Guardian Peak (1 227m), which has stunning panoramic views of the Cape Peninsula, from Table Mountain to Cape Point, Robben Island, False Bay, Cape Hangklip, and the peaks of the Hottentots Holland range. From Kurktrekker, the path descends past Tweede and Eerste Waterval, back to the starting point. Please note the path is slippery when wet.
Trail distance: 6.4km
Estimated time: 2 hours
This is an easy ramble along the Eerste River, past Eerste Waterval, followed by a steep climb along a gorge to the foot of Tweede Waterval. The dangerous ascent to this waterfall is closed but you can stop at Eerste Waterval on your way back down. Please note the path is slippery when wet. Bring a swimming costume with you.

Franschhoek – Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve
Trail distance: 13km
Estimated time: 5 hours
The in-and-out trail to DuToitskop Peak starts and ends at the main entry gate to the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve. The trail rises about 660m to DuToitskop Peak (elevation 1407m; 33-52-57 S; 19-09-00 E) and a moderately fit person can hike to DuToitskop Peak in less than 3 hours (one way). The DuToitskop Trail, which includes the walk up to Breakfast Rock, branches off to the left (in a north westerly direction) at Breakfast Rock. The trail mostly heads in a north-north westerly direction, rising steadily (about 15-17m per 100m). Magnificent vistas of the Franschhoek valley can be seen on the way up.
Trail distance: 6km
Estimated time: 3-4 hours
Notes: The first section of this well-marked and popular linear trail includes the Breakfast Rock Trail. A fit hiker can complete the round trip in about 3 hours. Unprepared hikers should not divert to the Perdekop Trail. The distance from the main gate to the vantage point at the terminus of the Uitkyk Trail is about 3km from where you double back to the main gate. The trail crosses a stream about 845 metres beyond Breakfast Rock; this is a wonderful place to stop – the water is safe to drink and very refreshing. The Uitkyk trail terminus and panoramic viewpoint boast a spectacular view of the secluded Wemmershoek valley and Wemmershoek Dam.
